The Rebellion

Smoke hung over the distant roof tops as Kasper Seidl survived the scene. Not too much damage he concluded, the docks seemed clear of smoke and even around the centre there appeared little damage the insurrectionists had not gone on a rampage of pillaging after the Kellerite civil mission had been ejected. “Almost a civilized affair” he considered and with the docks free he would be able to get his much needed reinforcements.

He turned to the scarecrow of a man beside him. “Herr Vorsteher what happened?” The man began to shake with anger “Heathens… They are Heathens I tell you. Attacking church property, assaulting ordained clergy and turning away properly sanctified assessors. They are heathens… You general must intervene and break them to the will of the church!” His piece said the man ran down and seemed to some how shrink a little.

Kasper gestured to his aid standing nearby and took a rather torn poster bill. The Poster made lurid reading. “It says here herr Vorsteher that you have suspended all Kliene-Hoysee clergy pending heresy hearings priests, banned any gatherings outside holy communion and are imposing a 25% church tithe on all property. I thought the clergy of Kliene-Hoysee followed the churches teachings was that not so?” .

“My son,” the scarecrow again began to inflate,” leave church matters to me. I only require you to regain order and I will deal with what are internal church matters.”. For a few moments the General regarded the cleric, “Of course Herr Vorsteher. However there is one small problem. As I am sure you are aware the Army is forbidden to intervene in what you have just stated are purely church matters. I will need you to officially call on the army in this matter and declare a state of emergency which threatens the well being of Keller.” Again Kasper gestured, again the aid provided a document, this one however was several pages thick and richly embossed with seals. “ If you could just sign this, a formality but without it….” the General left his words hang in the air. Blustering the cleric hastily signed the offered document which Andrea returned to his aid. “Thank Herr Vorsteher. If you would return to your quarters I have an egg to unscramble.” He turned away to again study the suburbs of Kliene-Hoysee. The fool had signed the document without reading it! Kliend-Hoysee was outside church control until the Chancellor declared otherwise not the Bishop or one of his power crazed lackeys.

Kliene-Hoysee Kasper's next task was not so easy. With little more than a general idea of where and how many troops the Insurrections had he had to proceed slowly. A Church steeple as a guide to the bridge crossing the river Hoy the Kellerite troops advanced. The Jaeger supported be the artillery moved along the main Leasowe Road while Raparger's Infantry Brigade advanced on the right.

It was the Jaeger who ran in to the first group of rebels. In the close urban terrain the Kellerite advantages of range and firepower were not as overwhelming as in a normal battle. The Jaeger withdrew with heavy casualties when a band of men erupted from a block of houses. The Artillery which had deployed in the streets behind the Jaeger's skirmish line drove the Insurrectionists back leaving many dead and wounded in the dusty street. Fire was now coming from a barricade which was manned by the Kliene-Hoysee Civic Guard what passed for regular troops in the river port. This effectively halting any further advance down the main road.

The main effort then shifted to the right. With battalions crossing a park and trying to outflank the rebel position. Effective musket from the rebels held the approach through the park and one battalion ran in to a highly effective fusillade of gunfire which routed the unit out of the fight.

That was however the high-point for the rebellion. A second battalion finding the flank of the rebel position swung around and delivered a bayonet charge which threw the rebels out of there prepared position. Combined with mounting loses and despite a desperate attempt to retake the position the Insurrectionists broke allowing a Kellerite advance into the city proper.

Arriving at the Town Hall General Seidl issued a prepared proclamation. A state of emergency had been declared in Kleine-Hoysee until further notice. While the bearing of arms would hence forth be punishable by death. All Kliene-Hoysee clergy were released and the 25% tithe was suspended until further notice. All citizens were warned that and dissent would be met by swift punishment. As a measure of his fair but tough rule The General ordered the three main ringleaders hung but granted an amnesty to all of the rest of the insurrection forces. Now how quickly could the rest of Kellers army disembark at the quays and wharfs of the port?
